It looks like there will be no turning back on last year’s decision to close the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.
The Georgia Department of Economic Development Board of Directors voted Thursday to declare the site of the former museum in Macon, Ga., surplus property, a step that will set the stage for the state to sell the building.
The Georgia Music Hall of Fame Authority’s board voted last May to close the museum after the General
Assembly eliminated state funding for it, citing low attendance. The museum shut down a month later.
Two cities in the Atlanta region, Dunwoody and Woodstock, made attempts to get the museum. But their bids were rejected due in large part to the lack of guaranteed long-term government support.
The museum’s collection, including more than 30,000 records, books and costumes, was moved to The University of Georgia’s special collections library for safekeeping.
The resolution deeming the Macon site surplus property still must go before the State Properties Commission for final approval.
